The World in your lap.

I recently purchased this radio on eBay, after reading about how it did not work, after someone at a thrift store added some batteries to it (it did not come with a A/C cord) and it would not turn on. These Radios range in value from $80.00(for not working) to over $300.00 for one that had been re-capped (had all the capacitors replaced and re-tuned). There even was one that had the original box and the owner swore that it was never used and the pictures of it looked like he was right. It sold for over $1000.00 to some collector.The radios were built in the late 1970's right about at the peak of the S/W era for the world. This radio has an analog dial and no digital numbers for 1977 when this one was sold. What has happened since then is the personal computer has taken root, and the Internet became the place where everyone now gets information about the world, complete with 'Fake' news or 'Propaganda' as the old term was known.Ok, so what makes this 'Radio' so valuable? Well, either by luck or design, Panasonic added an extra filter section in this radio that makes it the most sensitive AM and S/W radio ever designed. It rivals Grundig, Sony, Sanguine, and many more 'exceptional' and expensive S/W units that have been built in the past. The movable 'Bar' antenna is very directional and highly sensitive to am, and the FM gives full bodied and crisp sound whether playing music or listening to a talk show on your favorite PBS station.That's why people love this radio. Yes it is the size of a large purse and is analog, and does not have a clock. But the real jewel of this radio it what it is built for, and that was to pull in the weakest of stations from around the world for your listening pleasure.These radios are still exceptional, but are showing their age, and in most cases have to be re-capped in order to pull in those weak signals again. Re-cap kits are sold here on eBay, and for one weekend of soldering, and tuning, can have a good working radio again. But don't attempt to do this is you are not comfortable in tearing into the guts of a project like this. Take it to a pro.Of course, any missing items like the power cord or the carrying strap or knobs or battery door, do affect the price.As for me, when I received the Radio, I jiggled the power on switch and the volume controls, and it is working again. I will have to take it apart and spray some potentiometer cleaner into these items to clean them up so they work better, but I will do that once my Capacitor set gets here and I can do it all at once.I even found a special square A/C power cord with the prongs only 7mm apart that will make the radio useful now without batteries.You can even download a user manual on line.As long as AM radio is still being used and FM as well, I foresee this radio lasting another 40 years, well past after I am gone.Then some lucky person will find my set in a thrift store...and be curious about it...Good luck on your find, and happy listening.Bryan Smith 1/26/2017Read full review
