This Minecraft tutorial explains all about texture packs (also called resource packs) in Minecraft and what you do with them. Let's take a closer look.

What is a Texture Pack?

In Minecraft, a texture pack determines what the texture of the blocks, items and mobs in your Minecraft world will look like. In the latest versions of Minecraft, texture packs are now called resource packs and can now contain custom sounds as well as custom textures.

This is what your world would look like with the classic Minecraft texture pack:

What Texture Packs are Available?

Although the classic Minecraft 'look' is great, you might want to consider changing the look of your world with a different texture pack.

Let's explore the more common ways to get a texture pack in Minecraft.

1. Texture Pack as Downloadable Content

The first way to get a texture pack in Minecraft is to download a Texture Pack as downloadable content from within the Minecraft game. Not all versions of Minecraft have Texture Packs available for download but you can easily find them in Minecraft PE, Windows 10, and the console editions (Xbox, PS, Wii U, Nintendo Switch).

Here is a list of the Texture Packs that are currently available as downloadable content in Minecraft:

  • Candy Texture Pack
  • Plastic Texture Pack
  • Fallout Mash-up
  • Fantasy Texture Pack
  • Chinese Mythology Mash-up Pack
  • Steampunk Texture Pack
  • Natural Texture Pack
  • PureBDCraft
  • Stone Age Texture Pack
  • City Texture Pack
  • City Texture Pack
  • Adventure Time Mash-up
  • Adventurer's Dream
  • Festive Map-up 2016
  • Greek Mythology Mash-up Pack
  • Skyrim Mash-up

And more are always being added!

2. Download a Texture Pack from the Internet

The second way to get a texture pack is to find a website that has Minecraft texture packs, download the pack and then open the texture pack in Minecraft.

3. Design your own Texture Pack

Minecraft Mods

The third way to get a texture pack involves designing your own and opening the pack in Minecraft. This method is a bit more tricky and requires some experience.

Congratulations, you just learned about texture packs in Minecraft.

Other Beginner Tutorials

Late last year, we released a new texture pack for the Java Edition of Minecraft, so we could get your feedback!

We were always adamant that these changes wouldn't be implemented into Java Edition properly until we got your feedback – and now enough of you have screamed about the glass block for us to release an updated pack! This is Version 2 and you can click this green line of text here to download it now!

What do you think? Does glass look more gorgeous than ever before? Has Netherack never looked better? Has the new gold block made your eyes wish they'd never been born? Let us know!

This texture pack is designed to work in 1.12, so make sure you're using it with that version and then you're good to go!

[1/3] Glass! How hard was it to update this texture? It was a real pane. HA!
[2/3] Netherrack! Now so distractingly pretty, we keep walking into the lava...

[3/3] Diamond! Gold! Emerald! These gemstones have never looked flashier!

This texture pack for Java edition will work a lot like the snapshots we frequently release, so be warned that errors may occur. Here's how you can install it in Minecraft Java!

  1. Click this line of snazzy green text to download the texture pack. Easy! You'll now have a .zip file.
  2. Copy that .zip file.
  3. Open Minecraft: Java Edition
  4. On the main menu, select Options and then Resource Packs.
  5. Select Open Resource Pack Folder.
  6. This will open that folder. Now just paste the .zip file you copied earlier into this folder.
  7. Once it's finished pasting, close the folder and go back to Minecraft.
  8. Under Resource Packs, you'll see a list of Available Resource Packs. Your new texture pack should now be on this list! Select it and you're done!

Still not working? Try this link for step-by-step instructions for different devices.

BUT MOJANG, HOW DO I GIVE YOU MY FEEDBACK?

Glad you asked! There are a couple of ways to get feedback on these textures to us. First, you can click this green text to be taken to our feedback site. We've also set up a Reddit post where you can leave feedback. Remember, the texture pack is designed to work in 1.12.

Just hit the download button below to get the textures. Don't forget to tell us what you think!
